iRobot Roomba & Braava – AI powered surface cleaning robots

We are not far from the future where our homes and lives will get populated by robots and other artificially intelligent devices. Once, robots working at homes was only Richie Rich kind of fictitious stuff. But domestic robots are no longer fiction. I’ve already written about robots like LG Rolling Bot, ASUS Zenbo, and surface cleaning robots by iRobot,

Recently, I got the chance to see iRobot Roomba and Braava robots in action. These are impressive robotic devices powered by Artificial Intelligence that can take the labour out of floor cleaning and vacuuming. The Roomba devices are robotic vacuum cleaners that can clean floors, tiles, carpets etc. Braava is a mopping device for dry and wet mopping hard surfaces. Both these robot cleaners are compatible with Amazon Alexa and IFTTT and can be remotely controlled using iRobot HOME app. They can even deliver reports about the cleaning progress on this app.

Roomba Vacuuming Robot:

Roomba vacuum cleaners are sturdy and capable robotic surface cleaning devices. Powered by the i-Adapt Navigation technology, these devices can map the cleaning area, navigate automatically in it, and deliver hassle-free cleaning. They can navigate around furniture, go under sofas and beds to clean, and vacuum the area without any manual guidance. The Cliff-detect sensors help them avoid potentional drop-off regions like stairs.

The Dirt Detect technology of these robots helps them to target higher footfall regions where more dirt accumulates. And the 3-stage cleaning process of Romba robots help them to deliver efficient cleaning. This 3-stage cleaning includes:

  1. Roomba’s Edge-Sweeping Brush sweeps debris away from the room’s edges and corners.
  2. The Multi-Surface Brushes lift dust, dirt,  and hair from floors and carpet etc.
  3. Vacuum suction sucks up the dirt, dust,  and debris, leaving the surface clean.

The Roomba models available in India start from Rs. 18,990. The higher-end Roomba models have extra features like deeper cleaning on carpets, custom cleaning preferences, recharge and resume feature, etc.

Roomba robots are efficient vacuum cleaning devices that can map and clean the area on their own. Due to their small height, they can easily go under sofas and beds and clean hard to reach places. And thanks to the iRobot HOME app, they can be controlled and monitored remotely.

iRobot Braava mopping robot in India

iRobot Braava mopping robot:

While Roomba is a vacuuming robot, Braava is a mopping robot. It has two cleaning modes – the Dry mode (sweeping) and the Wet mode (mopping). Having only three control buttons (Start, Sweep, Mop), Braava is very easy to use. Guided by the Northstar Navigation Cube, it uses iAdapt 2.0 technology to map and move around the cleaning area. It comes with a microfiber mopping cloth. When needed, this cloth can be bought at iRobots website. Alternatively, microfiber cloth from other brands can also be used. Like the Roomba, Braava too has Cliff Detect sensors to keep it from safe at danger areas like stairs.

Braava is a very compact device that can easily navigate around the furniture or go under it. Moreover, it is remarkably quiet. Like Roomba, this cleaning robot too can be controlled and monitored using the iRobot HOME app. And it is also compatible with virtual assistants like Alexa. In operation, it is slower than Roomba. Also, it only mops hard surfaces like floor, marble, tiles, wood. It cannot clean surfaces like carpets. And it only mops. It cannot lift any dust or scraps like the Roomba can.

If you keep then in a doorway, you can block an entire room from these cleaning robots.
